Don’t Let Your Domain Name Expire. I Almost Did.

I do this for a living.
I build websites. I manage domains. I help businesses stay visible online.
And I almost let one of my own domain names expire.
Here’s what happened
For weeks, I kept getting emails about one of my domains.
They looked off.
Strange sender address
Going straight to spam
Felt like the usual “your domain is expiring” scam
So I ignored them. Then one day I decided to check manually. Not by clicking the email (Never click links in those emails.) I went directly to my registrar’s website and logged into my account. That’s when I saw it. My domain was days away from expiring.
What is a domain registrar?
A domain registrar is the company where you purchase and manage your domain name.
Examples include Wix, Bluehost, GoDaddy, and Namecheap.
They control:
Your domain registration
Renewal dates
DNS settings
Ownership records
If your domain expires, your website builder cannot save you. The control sits with the registrar.
This happens more than you think
Around that same time, I tried to access the website of a major corporation. The site would not load. Error page. I reached out to their support team. They told me their domain name had expired. That is not a small mistake. That is the kind of mistake that should cause heads to roll. Your domain name is your business identity.
What happens if your domain expires?
This is where it gets serious.
Your website goes offline
Your email stops working
Customers cannot reach you
Your brand looks unreliable
You risk losing the domain to someone else
You may have to pay a premium to get it back
Your search rankings can drop
In some cases, businesses lose their domain permanently. Years of work gone.
How to stay on top of it
Keep it simple and consistent.
Set a calendar reminder at least 30 days before expiration
Turn on auto-renew and keep your payment method updated
Register your domain for multiple years
Log into your registrar account a few times per year
Make sure your registrar emails do not go to spam
Do not rely on memory.
One more thing most people overlook
Your business evolves.
Your website setup should evolve with it.
You might be:
On the wrong Wix plan
Missing features that could bring in leads
Paying for things you do not need
I’ll check it for you
I offer a full website and domain audit for $50.
Here’s what I review:
Your domain expiration date
Registrar setup and ownership
Renewal risks
DNS configuration
Whether you are on the right Wix hosting plan
Gaps that could affect performance or leads
It is simple, direct, and focused on what matters. If something is off, you will know exactly what to fix. If everything looks good, you get peace of mind. Don’t let your website and access to your important emails disappear before you take this seriously.
